Georgia Peeking out from under blanket picture

October 1, 2003

This will be the last entry on this web page. Things are happening pretty quickly with Georgia's CRF, so I started a web log here. It's much easier to update than cutting and pasting all this HTML code.

Well, we got the results from Georgia's blood test and they're VERY close to normal, but NOT normal. Our vet doesn't know yet if she's got chronic renal failure or not, so we're keeping up what we're doing and she'll go back in a month for another test.

Because her numbers are so close to normal, and because Laura hates seeing Georgia get the needle twice a day, we're going to give her subcutaneous fluids only once a day. I think she'll still be fine since twice a day treatments didn't push her blood values into the normal range. We'll see in a month.

We found a new, kidney-friendly food Georgia likes, but she stopped peeing and pooping for a few days, so we brought her back to the vet. When he put her on the scale, she was down to 8 pounds (her normal weight is 9 and a quarter). So, even though we weren't scheduled for blood test until Friday, he put her on subcutaneous (sub-Q) fluids to see if that would help her appetite. That was Monday and we can already see a change in her eating. Oh, and she's back on a daily bathroom regimen. Unfortunately, since we're pumping about 200 ml of fluid into her every day, she's peeing a lot. Sometimes she leaks a few drops, too, so we'll have to keep an eye on that. But it's really nice to see her eating heartily again.

We are trying to get Georgia to eat her "kidney-friendly" canned food, but she prefers dry food to canned and some of the new food upset her little stomach. So, she's a little wary of anything new. We mixed in a little of the new food with a lot of the old canned food she liked and have had some success. We hope to transition her to 100% kidney-friendly stuff by the end of the week, so we can tell if it had any positive effect when she gets her blood tested in two weeks.

In other respects, she seems almost the same as always. Maybe she's a little less playful and sleeps a little more than usual (hard to believe for a cat), but that's all.
